Swine Flu Virus Awareness
Emerging 2009 H1N1 'Swine' Flu Outbreak
Due to concerns for the health of students, faculty and staff at the Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the administration and emergency response personnel have been monitoring the emerging 2009 H1N1 'swine' flu outbreak. We’ll continue to assess and initiate actions to help ensure appropriate awareness and health safety. Updates will be posted here as available. In addition, a memo has been sent out to all students, faculty and staff. Please check your email.
The 2008-09 flu shot does not protect individuals against the swine flu. Swine flu is confirmed by a specialized laboratory test available at the Colorado Health Department. If an infected person must go into the community (e.g., to seek medical care) they should wear a face mask to reduce the risk of spreading the virus in the community when they cough, sneeze, talk or breathe. If a face mask is unavailable, ill persons needing to go into the community should use a handkerchief or tissues to cover any coughing.
CSTCM’s Clinic Director, Parago Jones, and Academic Dean, Tanya Carleton, remind us that if employees, faculty or students exhibit symptoms, they must be sent home. Employees who have the flu or have sick family members or others in their households needing care should not come to school, and must contact Tanya or Parago to determine whether class should be rescheduled or other arrangements can be made.
